First Time Gym Visit: Lincoln-Way Central
Despite being the oldest of the four Lincoln-Way high schools, Lincoln-Way Central helps me complete the trifecta of the Lincoln-Way gyms; Central, East, & West. While technically the fourth school Lincoln-Way North is still standing, it closed in 2016 after just 8-years of operating. Hence the Lincoln-Way trifecta and not Lincoln-Way foursome.
While I can’t count the number of times I’ve been to Central’s campus over the past 30 years, somehow it was just never for a sport in the gym. Because most times I end up at schools based on who the sports reporters & editors decide to cover, so it’s rarely my call. Being good in a sport helps, but also the editors try not to send us too far from home. New Lenox isn’t exactly around the corner from my house, so I rarely get asked to drive that far.
Lincoln-Way East
Beyond football I’ve been to East countless times as well over the past 20-plus seasons its housed varsity programs. (East was originally a underclassmen campus for Central when it was simple Lincoln-Way High School.) Oddly enough I’ve never covered a boys basketball game there though.
Lincoln-Way West
Not super surprisingly with it being one of the farthest southwest schools the Daily Southtown covers, my first visit to the gym at West wasn’t until early 2023. It first opened in 2009 and was the last of the four Lincoln-Way high schools built.
