While I’m on assignment for the various news outlets I work for, I’ve started looking into seeing if a high school has more than one gym.

Many times a school will have an older, sometimes more interesting gym that isn’t used for varsity games any more. Bloom Township & Schurz high schools come to mind. Sometimes you luck out and the old gym is the preferred venue for varsity games. Champaign Central and Chicago’s Lindblom, both have larger or newer gyms, but stick with their older gyms. And for that we thank you.

Thornton Fractional North High School, or T.F. North as it’s often called, is on its third gym as of 2006. (Technically it may be the fourth gym, as the original school burned downed in 1933.) The Purple Gym is the new addition on the western edge of the school. While a 1960s gym called the Gold Gym sits on the east side of the school.

You can see photos of both gyms on the T.F. North High School gym page, but the third and original gym is one most will have to see in their imaginations only. At some point after the 1960s gym was constructed, the gym in the original 1936 section of the building was converted into office space for the school administration staff.

If you have any photos of the old gym or any of any remnants of it that may still be visible, drop me a line so I can fill in the blanks here.
