Art Deco gem hidden in plain sight
I’ve covered my share of basketball games at Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights. Even in years where the Blazing Trojans have a down year, the school is typically a host for regionals or sectionals. It will forever live in my mind as the gym where I saw the basketball season end because of COVID19.
Yet, despite years of covering games there, I never realized there was second gym that was much older (and cooler) than the one I’d been to many times.
The Veazey Gym is located on the southeast corner of the building and can be seen easily from the outside. Many people accidentally walk up to it since it has a very inviting look, with steps and several doors. All part of it’s original main entrance which lead in to a lobby with ticket windows and trophy cases.
Bloom’s newer gym was built in 1976 and is where all the varsity games are played. Veazey was used for girls varsity games, but when Bloom Township & Bloom Trail high schools merged sports programs, girls varsity was moved to Bloom Trail High School in Steger in 1995.
